Deadly Daycare Massacre

Today, October 6, 2022, there was a mass shooting not in the United States and not in the usual setting (although there was also something similar in the United States). It happened in Thailand and in a day care center? Why? Apparently there was an ex-Police officer named Panya Karamp who was apparently fired earlier this year for drug-related offenses.

Panya had two predicaments running through his mind. One he had a court date coming up tomorrow in which he had to appear to face drug charges related to meth. Two, he had personal problems with various people.

So, why was this carried out? There is no motive I can figure out, the only thing I could think was getting fired and personal issues drove him to the point of where he went completely crazy, bonkers.

How? Here is the story according to the Associated Press and CBS News. Apparently that afternoon all the way far east in the heart of Asia lies Thailand. Well apparently it was a crazy day in a small place called Nongbua Lamphu. For some reason he wanted to go crazy with a massacre, who knows he planned it or not. He drove his car with a 9mm pistol handgun, which he bought himself from some gun shop along with another shotgun, and a knife. Wow this is getting really scary here.

Upon arriving at the area near the daycare center and just shot a man eating outside. Okay, maybe at that point he was just going insane here at first. He doesn’t know the guy, he just randomly just shot him and fired more gunshots according to one of the teachers at the daycare center.

At first when I was reading the story about this I was thinking he was going crazy. According to Reuters, apparently his child who was supposed to be at the daycare center got agitated and just started firing at other people according to Paisan Luesomboon, a police spokesperson who stated it on ThaiPBS TV.

When Panya paused firing at random people, the teacher who witness Panya literally shooting and murdering a random man eating lunch, she felt she needed to go into the building of the daycare center assuming the doors were locked and they would be protected from the shooter. There the staff said “well we locked all of the doors in the daycare center.” Apparently, they had no idea the attacker was about to enter the building.

Surprisingly, he was able to shoot through the door and break it open causing him to shoot numerous 2-3 year old children who were taking an afternoon nap along with a female teacher who was holding a child in her arms. Graphic images related to his incident following Panya’s rampage in the daycare center shows slashes and gunshot marks on some children’s faces and a horrific pool of blood.

If the teacher of the daycare center was well aware that a shooting was taking place outside of the daycare center, wouldn’t it be possible to place the entire building in lockdown for the safety of the youngsters and caretakers? In my opinion, the caretakers of the daycare center should’ve alerted them about a shooter outside and brought them to safety.

Following that horrific massacre, Panya drove back to his home and killed the remainder of his family (which included his wife and his child) before killing himself. This was one of the deadliest mass shootings in Thailand, the deadliest shooting in a daycare center (as far as I know) and one of the deadliest shootings worldwide. Between 36-40 people died in this massacre (including Panya/shooter himself) and more than 50 people were injured.

The deadliest mass shooting in Thailand happened two years ago in 2020 when a soldier killed 29 people near a mall in the city of Nakon Ratchamasa. Thats around 7-11 more people Panya killed in the most recent attack in Thailand.

When the Prime Minister of Thailand was aware of what has happened, he said the following:

“This shouldn’t happen. I feel deep sadness toward the victims and their relatives.”

-Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of Thailand

Mass shootings like the one that happened today don’t happen so often in Thailand, but consequently has one of the highest gun ownership rates in Asia with 15.1 weapons per 100 population compared to Singapore and Japan with almost 0 weapons per 100 population (see source links for proof). That is far lower than the current rate in the United States rate of (gasp) 120.5 per 100 population.

The death rate for Firearm-related incidents according to the Associated Press is very low compared to the United States and Brazil.

However, for the death rate for Firearm related incidents within the continent of Asia, it is high compared to Japan and Singapore.

Why is that? It’s due to the harsh gun laws of the Japanese and Singapore governments.

So how come countries like the United States and Thailand cannot have stricter gun laws so we can prevent another mass shooting like the one that happened today and the ones in the past? I feel like the US government is taking some steps to stop gun violence and have better gun control in America, but should try to be a little more strict and follow what the governments in Japan and Singapore do. I think Thailand should do the same thing considering the fact they have the highest gun-ownership rates and

Maybe the world must come together and stop gun violence and enforce gun control altogether to stop people dying from gun bullets.

So here my question to you guys:

  1. In the United States, following the mass shooting in Thailand, do you think we have adequate gun control measures or should it be more strict?

  2. Should each country come together and stop gun violence and have better gun control? Why or why not?

  3. Should’ve the daycare center been put on lockdown? Why or why not?
